- Seanad: Maritime Safety Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (20 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister of State and his officials for the comprehensive and reassuring explanatory material he has provided on this legislation. It would be a welcome development and would make our job much easier if all legislative matters were explained in such a manner. Fine Gael broadly welcomes this Bill. Our approach is to emphasise that safety must be the greatest priority and concern....

Frank Feighan: I also welcome this measure regarding intoxication. Unfortunately these regulations will most likely be enacted after a major tragedy. There are gardaà and checkpoints on the roads. I had a pleasure craft on the Shannon and it was clear that the vast amount of people in control of such crafts had consumed alcohol. Are we going far enough? Is there a case for having spot-checks at locks and...
- Seanad: Maritime Safety Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (20 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: What resources will be given to enforcing these provisions? Senator O'Meara has outlined the issue of people getting off and on vessels to go to hostelries along the Shannon. I do not believe the Garda is fully equipped to apprehend such people who overindulge in alcohol. How will these provisions be enforced?
- Seanad: Maritime Safety Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (20 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: I am unsure if I am speaking on the same issue, but currently the use of jet skis varies under the by-laws introduced by local authorities. I wonder if this will involve on-the-spot fines and penalties up to â¬2,000. The Leader of the House has correctly stated that all the Members appear to have a difficulty with jet skis and while one does not wish to make jet skiers out as "bad boys",...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: I join in the call for a debate on immigration. Despite the increased use of communications it is virtually impossible to make contact with the visa or immigration sections of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. That is unacceptable in this day and age. I am aware of one constituent who has spent more than four weeks trying to get through to the immigration section of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the fact the banks will pay the full cost of providing Army escorts for cash in transit. We should not clap ourselves on the back. This situation has been going on for ten years since the Good Friday Agreement. If an ordinary citizen does not pay his or her tax, Revenue has a claw back. Therefore, this Government should rightfully seek a claw back of up to â¬4 million for each of...
- Seanad: Rights of Migrant Workers: Statements. (13 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: I thank Senator Cummins for sharing his time with me as I am anxious to speak on this issue. Times have changed from little over a decade ago and the previous century and a half when many young Irish people relied on other countries for employment. The Irish diaspora travelled to the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and many other countries and were well taken care of. Our rights...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)
Frank Feighan: I support Senator Ross's call for the Minister for Transport to come to the House to explain the disturbing security breaches at Dublin Airport. Knives, an imitation bomb and a replica gun were smuggled through security. The Government is not doing enough to ensure the travelling public's confidence is secured in air travel. It is not as if costs are decreasing at Dublin Airport. The daily...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: I support Senator Leyden in raising what has happened in Roscommon. The Taoiseach opened Roscommon hospital less than two months ago, but he did not provide the necessary resources. Senator Leyden should address his own partyââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: I was involved in the by-election in Meath where a flawed opinion poll was published.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: In the interests of democracyââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: Yes. We should invite the relevant Minister here to ensure that opinion polls cannot be published in any newspaper less than a month before a general election. They undermine democracy.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: He wants more people along the Westmeath border too.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: I ask the Leader to invite the relevant Minister to the House for a debate on child care costs. A report published today has stated that child care costsââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: It is appropriate to have another debate, because there is a report in today's newspapers which, if I might address Senator Whiteââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: There is a report on the issue in today's newspapers and another debate would be very appropriate.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: New information came to light this morning.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: I was also shocked by last night's IRA statement in which it stated that it had offered to kill the killers of Robert McCartney. People's reaction was to ask from where the statement was coming. Despite various statements and hot air and the McCartney family's visit to Dublin, the IRA has still failed to produce a single witness statement from any of the people involved. We should focus on...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (8 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: I support the call for a debate on the future of Aer Lingus. As Senator Finucane correctly pointed out, it is more than four months since its chief executive resigned in controversial circumstances and a decision on his replacement has not been made. Time is of the essence. The future viability of the company will be undermined unless a decision is made. I refer to the issue of children who...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (3 Mar 2005)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the Taoiseach's comments on the western rail corridor, especially given the many flawed reports which overestimated the amount of funding needed for that corridor. I welcome his commitment to the western rail corridor and look forward to funding being advanced as soon as possible. Senator Mooney raised the issue of teenage drinking. Maybe we should debate this again. The problem has...
