Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I welcome Ms O'Keeffe, Mr. Clonan and all the other witnesses. This is my first opportunity to say this following the report on the crash of R116. I add my voice to the condolences for Dara Fitzpatrick, Mark Duffy, Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith. I would also add my voice to those condolences for Caitríona Lucas. That just shows the nature of the work the Coast Guard does and its...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that. I also do not want to get into a "he said, she said" situation. I accept that would be unfair. I am interested in the process and putting in place a better process in future that catches such issues. We are talking about volunteers who do serious work, combined with the management the witnesses have to do. We need something that works.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Would it be fair to say that at this time Mr. Clonan believes the system is improving in relation to catching mistakes and so on, but obviously there is an absolute necessity for two-way communication and trust, and these other issues do not help with that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: On the three areas the Coast Guard deals with, does Mr. Clonan believe at this time that we have the fit-for-purpose operation we need and require?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: What about the issue of resources and so on, leaving aside the issue that it is hoped will be dealt with?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Mr. Clonan said there is a review ongoing-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: In fairness, what exactly does the organisation need to be fit for purpose across all the sectors? I get that Mr. Clonan is saying the organisation is moving in the right direction, but what is that final destination?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are heading in the right direction, but we are not there. That will bring the staff up to 29. That is virtually doubling the staff. What will they be doing?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Has the process started for recruitment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: No, it is significant work and in fairness I think that is where we are going on this.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: No, I appreciate that. We will try to facilitate the new staff as much as we can because it is necessary so that the Coast Guard can be fit for purpose. We spoke about volunteers and the term used was "dilution of service". There was a question of whether that related to a lack of training, insurance or whatever. With the additional staff mean that some of those issues will be dealt with?...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Coast Guard: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I appreciate that. As the Chairman said, we are here because these HR issues have been raised with us. If the Coast Guard needs more staff to run the organisation and it needs outside knowledge or a consultant to ensure there is best practice in communication and dealing with the grievances, then that is vital. I welcome what the witnesses said about the safety audits and the operational...

Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Bill 2021 [Seanad]: Second Stage (17 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: This is not the first interaction I have had with the Minister in the past while but I do not think I have welcomed her back to the House, so I do so now. She now has one of the most difficult jobs anyone has ever had, not to mention the difficulties that relate to ministerial office. There is general agreement across the House regarding the fact this legislation is necessary, given we...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (17 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: On what has just been said, Sinn Féin has an all-Ireland approach, as it has in relation to everything else and that includes women's rights. I welcome the shared island unit. I wish it would go further in certain fields, as I have said before. There are only benefits to be had in relation to a dialogue and engagement with all. That is why I have previously asked for a citizens'...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (17 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: No, we do not.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Northern Ireland (17 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We hope to end it.

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The Taoiseach is happy enough with the timeline.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (17 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Was there any discussion about green bonds and physical constraints or a roadmap?

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (17 Nov 2021)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I will not repeat what has been said. Obviously, I add my voice in support of Seán Binder. I put the same question about Lukashenko and the weaponisation of migrants which shocks us all. We all know how the energy crisis is impacting people. We are all beginning to get stories of people who cannot afford to pay for their gas, oil or electricity and are forced to consider...
