I have not got an answer to the question she raised but I will revert to her on the matter. Senator Murnane O'Connor mentioned volunteerism. International Volunteer Day was last week. Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Gavan raised the issue of food banks in the United Kingdom. Both he and Senator Norris raised the issue in the context of the UK general election tomorrow. Irrespective of who wins, it is important that we on this island work with the new British Government. We may have certain views, which I will not express as Leader, other than to say we wish every candidate success tomorrow.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Gavan made a point on the rise of food banks. It is interesting that there were none in the North of our country a decade ago. There are now 30. That is worth considering in the context of the Senator's conversation. Senator Swanick raised the issue of direct provision. It is exercising the Government. The McMahon report is being implemented. There is a need to move away from...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I was interrupted by a number of people but I am getting there. Senator McDowell has been exercised by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Ross, a lot today. The Minister has done a very good job in showing the inadequacy of the FAI, and the Senator should give him credit for that. What the Minister is actually doing, which is quite right, is diverting money from the FAI...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I commend Senator Craughwell on his work with the NFA. The points he made are ones we should pursue. I will be happy to talk to him afterwards about this.It is important that we acknowledge the NFA, not just in a tokenistic way but in real terms. I would be happy to talk to Senator Craughwell about that. Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell raised the issue of visa requirements for healthcare...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: HIV-AIDS Programmes (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I raise the issue of the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis, PrEP, in Cork. It is important that Cork, in conjunction with other cities and large towns, have access to PrEP and its availability be widespread. The availability of PrEP is just one part of a sexual health programme, along with the excellent work done by the Sexual Health Centre in Cork to provide rapid HIV testing.The...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: HIV-AIDS Programmes (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the allocation of €5.4 million for the national roll-out, the Minister of State's commitment for the HIV PrEP service in CUH and the February date for its opening. We had been promised 4 November. It is important that we instill confidence in the service to augment and support the work being done locally and that February is not an arbitrary date, but one that can be met....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the nine Senators for their contributions to the Order of Business. I welcome Senator Clifford-Lee back to the House following her excursions during the by-election campaign and wish her well in her future endeavours. She raised an important matter earlier that needs to be highlighted more frequently. She is correct that domestic homicide has not received the same level of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Irrespective of who we listen to, there needs to be proper accountability and transparency. We should all remember that with the €2.9 million of Government money or other moneys going into the FAI, it is not the persons involved but the organisation which benefits. That is why probity with other people's money is important. Senator Craughwell referred to a letter with which I am not...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Black referred to the presentation on endometriosis in the audiovisual room. She will be aware that the Government has formed a women's health task force. Women's health is very important to this Government and it has been prioritised in many things the Government has done. Proper education is important, not only from health and medical professionals but also in our education...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I forgot to mention Senator O'Mahony's reference to the Public Health (Alcohol) Act. My information is that the issue is linked to the Scottish decision, which I think has been approved by the European Union. I would be happy for the Minister to come to the House. The Senator has raised a very important matter on the issue of the sale of alcohol.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator O'Mahony has been very vigilant on this. The newspaper advertisements indicate that alcohol is being sold as a loss leader to encourage people to buy alcohol. The price of spirits is quite stark. I will have the Minister come to the House as soon as possible and I apologise to the Senator.
