Stephen Donnelly: 856. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport his plans to make vintage trucks and trailers exempt from testing under the Road Safety Authority (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness) Act 2012, in order that pre-1980 vintage trucks are treated equally with other vintage veteran vehicles, for example cars and caravans, which are exempt from roadworthiness testing; and if he will make a...

Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I thank the Taoiseach for his reply, but if I were one of these families I would be despairing at that answer. We do know what is going to happen. We know that none of the domestic banks will buy the loans. If NAMA buys them, if Apollo buys them or if some vulture fund in New York buys them, none of the potential buyers is covered by the Central Bank regulations. We know that to be the...

Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I would like to change topic to another important and pressing issue. In just a matter of weeks, the special liquidator of IBRC is planning to sell more than 13,000 mortgages on the open market. I have met some of the families involved, people like Ms Denise McCormack and Mr. Mike Hurrell, who were featured on "Prime Time" last night. The families have two concerns. First, they will not...

Companies (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (5 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I will finish on this point. This is a good Bill. It would save thousands upon thousands of jobs. It provides more protection to the SMEs which are the creditors. I admit two groups of people would lose, namely, lawyers and foreign banks that are trying to shut down viable companies to get their assets out of the country. Everyone else would win. I commend this Bill to the House.

Companies (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (5 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I thank all Members on all sides of the House who contributed to the debate this evening and yesterday. I have listened carefully to them. It seems to me there is plenty of common ground where it matters most, namely that this Bill presents an opportunity to save thousands of companies and jobs at zero cost to the State. There is also common agreement on all sides that the current system...

Leaders' Questions (5 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I have had it reviewed by senior counsel and I would love to see the legal advice that claims it is legally unsound. The Bill is not unsound. If there are aspects of it that need to change - undoubtedly there are because we do not have access to the Office of the Attorney General - that is what the legislative process is for. It must be incredibly frustrating for the owners of businesses...

Leaders' Questions (5 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I have already done so.

Leaders' Questions (5 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: At 9 p.m. this evening the Government will vote down a Bill that could save thousands of companies and tens of thousands of jobs. The Bill would do so without the need to spend a single penny in public money. Every year hundreds of companies in Ireland are shut down that do not need to be because we do not have a functioning examinership process. This is how badly it is broken. In the...

Companies (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage [Private Members] (4 Feb 2014)

Stephen Donnelly: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I will share time with Deputies Finian McGrath and Catherine Murphy. I am delighted to have the opportunity to introduce Second Stage of the Bill. I thank Mr. Ross Maguire, S.C., and Mr. Barry Lyons, solicitor, for all of their work and expertise in drafting the Bill. I also thank the officials of the Bills Office for their Trojan work...
