Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Property Owners Association (24 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: A lot of questions have not been answered. Can the witnesses send us the information if there is not the time to answer them now? The question on increased costs has not been answered nor has the question on how many properties currently being held would be released if owners got the tax break they are seeking.

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Property Owners Association (24 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: We need to work that out because we have to calculate whether it would be better not to have such a tax break and make the investment in social housing instead.

Ruth Coppinger: For whom?

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Property Owners Association (24 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: Mr. O'Brien said that earlier. I am talking about additional properties that are being held back now that would be released by the association's members and others if we gave them a tax break.

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Housing Finance Agency (24 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: It is a pity we are discussing this now rather than at the forthcoming session with the Department of Finance because it would be more appropriate to that. However, I also want to ask about the EU rules, which are a critical issue for the housing situation in this country. To clarify, is it the case that the EU rules are preventing the Housing Finance Agency from lending to local...

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Tiglin Challenge (19 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: I welcome the delegates to the committee and welcome the fact that anyone would do work among addicts and would help with regard to homelessness. However, I want to ask about Tiglin's ethos, because other Deputies asked if Tiglin was seeking to be a housing body. Obviously, Tiglin is also seeking a form of State subsidy. I, therefore, think it is legitimate to ask the following. I know...

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Tiglin Challenge (19 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: Okay, it does not. However, there is reference to a literal belief in the Bible. We all know what a literal belief in the Bible can mean. In terms of gay people, it could mean that Tiglin would have not a good attitude to gay people who might be homeless or addicts. I have to raise these questions if Tiglin is seeking Government funding. On their attitude to drugs, do the delegates think...

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Tyrrelstown Residents (19 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: I hope the heartfelt words of the Tyrrelstown residents will be listened to by all members today. My daughter goes to school in Tyrrelstown. I know the residents all very well as I live beside the estate in question. Regarding the frustrations expressed by Charlie Cleary, this is an area that has been badly underserved by the State. It is an area of 2,000 homes, all in quite close...

Ruth Coppinger: I am just giving a bit of background about the vulture fund as well.

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Tyrrelstown Residents (19 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: Looking at what is outlined in the document, the only sure-fire solution to stop people becoming homeless would involve the State acquiring these properties. There are 40 properties involved in this instance but there are potentially 150 to 200 properties because other people could get a notice at any time. Let us say it involves 100 houses. Fingal County Council has been negotiating with...

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Tyrrelstown Residents (19 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: They will not display any social obligation.

Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Tyrrelstown Residents (19 May 2016)

Ruth Coppinger: I will clarify one thing. People might not understand that the developer who built these houses owns them. The crash came and he could not sell them. If the State was to buy them, I do not see that as caving in. It would add to the housing stock and I will tell the Chairman why. At least half of the people involved are on the council's housing list in any event and could become council...
