Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 29 - Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Revised)
(11 Feb 2015)

Michael Moynihan: It covers a raft of issues. We have had meetings to discuss the issue of hydraulic fracking. What money is the Department spending on research into fracking? In discussing natural resources the other old chestnut is oil and gas. We have been hoping for generations to find fields off the coast. Last year it seemed that some of the fields to the south west had great potential, but that...

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 29 - Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Revised)
(11 Feb 2015)

Michael Moynihan: Inland fisheries is the great untapped resource in the country. The Wild Atlantic Way has done a massive amount for the coast. There are a couple of things I wish to mention. Some of the Leader companies did a power of work on the life project in conjunction with the Department and the European Union. They did a pile of cleaning up of rivers and enhancing inland fisheries. The Department...

Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 29 - Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (Revised)
(11 Feb 2015)

Michael Moynihan: One of the major issues was a lack of awareness among community groups, be they local development companies or local angling associations, that this funding was available. The Minister spoke about river beds, spawning and so forth and it is clear that a huge amount of work must be done. Rivers have been overgrown inland, among other things. It is a crying shame that money was sent back....

Michael Moynihan: 330. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine his plans to compensate farmers whose land has been designated as special protection areas for the hen harrier; if his plans to include such farmers in the GLÁS scheme are not adequate to compensate for the enormous impact this derogation has on the value of the lands in question; and if he will make a statement on...

Michael Moynihan: 656. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if her attention has been drawn to the plight of farmers whose lands have been designated as special protection areas for the hen harrier; her views that this designation renders these lands worthless, in areas of rural Ireland where people can least afford these restrictions; and if she will make a statement on the...

Other Questions: Electricity Transmission Network (29 Jan 2015)

Michael Moynihan: When does the Minister expect these reports to be published? Surely the panel is keeping him and his Department informed of the situation. When will the reports be available for public consultation so that people can make their minds up about the issues concerning them and their communities?

Other Questions: Electricity Transmission Network (29 Jan 2015)

Michael Moynihan: When the Minister has the report, the least he might do is afford the House an opportunity to discuss it. As he well knows, the communities have significant concerns. These have abated somewhat during the wait for the reports, but the latter need to be published. Is the Minister concerned about the works that were proposed at the start of the process? Are they still necessary?

Other Questions: Electricity Transmission Network (29 Jan 2015)

Michael Moynihan: Regarding the EirGrid project, could the Minister provide an update on what reports he has received in his Department? When will the review of this project be completed? This is causing major concern in communities the length and breadth of the country and he might give us an update on where the review is at and when it will be before the Dáil.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: National Postcode System (29 Jan 2015)

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: National Postcode System (29 Jan 2015)

Michael Moynihan: There is much concern about privacy and data protection with regard to Eircode. The issues have been articulated by many groups. Has the Minister considered this in detail? Will he address it and make a statement on the matter?

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: National Postcode System (29 Jan 2015)

Michael Moynihan: Therein lies the issue: should the legislation the Minister is proposing not have come before Eircode is rolled out? When will that legislation be debated in the Houses of the Oireachtas? When will it be published? Will it be enacted in statute? Will it be the law of the land before Eircode is rolled out?

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: National Postcode System (29 Jan 2015)

Michael Moynihan: The line used in recent months was that there was no issue in respect of data protection, that all the consultation had taken place in respect of data protection and that the Department and the Government were satisfied with the data protection regulations, in spite of the fact that a raft of people had been raising concerns. However, there must have been a serious issue if the Government...
