Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Merchant Service Providers in the Travel Trade in Ireland: Discussion (23 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: My thanks to the commissioners for being here this morning.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Merchant Service Providers in the Travel Trade in Ireland: Discussion (23 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I was going to redouble on the request to bring in the merchant providers. As a committee, we should look at the potential in the Air Navigation and Transport Bill, when it comes to the Seanad, to try to address that lacuna. I thank Ms Mannion and Mr. Hodnett. It is important that we do not let this matter rest today.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Merchant Service Providers in the Travel Trade in Ireland: Discussion (23 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (23 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I apologise to Senator Dooley, but there is also a message appearing on the screen that there is someone waiting in the lobby, just so you know that, Chairman. I do not know what that is about.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (23 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I will not use the four minutes. I thank our two witnesses for attending. I concur with the sentiments expressed by many members on the need to enhance regional connectivity. Not surprisingly, coming from County Cork, I have a particular Cork angle. I do not make any apology for that. I thank the witnesses for the presentation. If NPHET recommends to Government that we do not proceed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (23 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I concur with Ms Fitzgerald Kane. I will finish on this. The issues around the tourism marketing funding, industry activation fund and route incentivisation schemes are initiatives that we as a committee should support at all levels and actively pursue. That is critical. I thank Ms Fitzgerald Kane for her presentation.

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: Yes. I am conscious of time. I thought we had a roster or a rota. I thank Dr. Muldoon and Ms Ward for being with us today and for their work. In the report, Dr. Muldoon spoke about the culture of fear. I apologise; I missed some of the meeting because I had a vote. Who created that culture of fear?

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: Is it fair to say the State or the agencies of the State do not create that culture of fear? Dr. Muldoon's report states the State perhaps does not have the concerns of children at heart. I am paraphrasing but that is the tenet of what is being said. I would say that is not the case. Surely, the remit of Tusla and the Department is the care and protection of young people.

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: Going back to the IPAS oversight, Dr. Muldoon spoke about it not being robust enough. Who is responsible for putting that oversight in place?

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: From his engagement with various sections of the Government or agencies working on behalf of the Government, does Dr. Muldoon get any sense of a willingness to embark on changes? We spoke about the McMahon report, which is the blueprint for what we all want to see. None of us wants direct provision to continue in any shape or form. Those of us who have visited direct provision centres...

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I wish to ask about the issue of unaccompanied minors. In America, there has rightly been a great outcry about the treatment of unaccompanied minors and Vice President Harris's remarks a few weeks ago when she told people not to come. What is our position on unaccompanied minors seeking to have refugee status granted to them? How does Dr. Muldoon foresee us engaging with and treating them?...

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank Dr. Muldoon and Ms Ward for their work and for highlighting these issues. It is important that there be a whole-of-government - I did not want to use the word "Government" - approach, that everyone moves in the same direction and that we all engage and listen. We have probably not listened to people in direct provision. They are people, and all they want is a better life for...

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: That is all right. We knew what the Chairman meant.

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I also thank the people who are recording and reporting us.

Committee on Public Petitions: Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision Report: Discussion (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: How would Dr. Muldoon categorise or describe his engagement with Tusla or the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: In respect of the members, I will not take the seven minutes. I welcome Ms Embleton and Mr. Moriarty to the committee and thank them for their attendance. Where are Aer Lingus's negotiations with Emerald Airlines regarding the routes which will be used to fill Stobart?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: Does Ms Embleton hope to have those discussions concluded soon? The reason I am asking is that Ms Embleton referenced in her remarks the PSO routes around Donegal and Kerry. From a Cork perspective, Stobart had eight regional routes that were lost. In my opinion, Cork Airport is looking to Aer Lingus now to show leadership in the context of expediting those talks with Emerald. Is there...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I am interested from a Cork perspective on the routes that were lost by Stobart. What is the view of Ms Embleton on these? What is the prognosis around what Aer Lingus will do to re-establish those routes lost by Stobart? What is the view in terms of the Aer Lingus commitment to Cork and its routes and staff?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: I will conclude by reiterating the points made by others. The workers represent one of the greatest assets of Aer Lingus. They have served Aer Lingus well, be it in the new format of the company or the old format. I hope we do not lose sight of that. I will appeal to Ms Embleton, Mr. Moriarty, Aer Lingus and IAG. As Ms Embleton said earlier, Ireland depends on connectivity. Airports...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Issues facing the Aviation Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Jerry Buttimer: In the context of Cork, I extend invitation to Ms Embleton to Cork. Senator Horkan, the Chair, Senator Byrne and others mentioned Shannon Airport. However, Cork Airport is the second biggest airport in the country. We should not lose sight of that.
