Committee on Education and Youth: Education for Children with Special Educational Needs: Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: They are integral to the communities they are in as well. They are so well known. I was happy to see the Department's direction under section 37A for the provision in Celbridge. Does that extend to private schools? My understanding is that there is no provision, or may not be provision, for special education places in private schools. If this is not the forum to ask the question, I can...

Committee on Education and Youth: Education for Children with Special Educational Needs: Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: I recently had a correspondence with someone recently and would like a bit a clarity on an issue. When students are in a special school and they reach 18 years of age, is that the cut-off point? Do they have to leave or can they finish their course? If they have to go when they are 18 or when their course finishes, what is the pathway for those students to go to further education or work...

Committee on Education and Youth: Education for Children with Special Educational Needs: Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth (25 Jun 2025)

Can anything done for next year? Is there a plan in place?

Jen Cummins: I thank all our guests for their interesting comments. Every day is a school day at all committees. I worked in education for years, including in a school completion programme. We always wanted young people to remain in education for as long as possible. I am delighted that, over the last 30 years or so, the prevalence of apprenticeships has increased. However, people were often...

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: I have two last questions on community training centres, Youthreach and DEIS schools. Over the years, I have been involved in Youthreach and CTCs and encouraged young people to go to them. What QQI level must applicants attain before they can be accepted for an apprenticeship? Years ago, people could train a bit younger. Is the age now a bit older?

Presidential Voting Rights: Motion [Private Members] (24 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: I thank Sinn Féin for introducing this motion. The Social Democrats will support it. Democracy is something we must strive to keep in a world where we see it being eroded and erased. Voting in elections is fundamental to democracy. The decision to extend voting rights to people has been a battle, particularly for women, over the past 100 years. Last year was a bumper year of...
