Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: How might that work in the case of something being routed by a third party?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I am sorry for stopping Mr. Smyth, but there is a huge amount of interest in this and this is a really key piece. Why is it more complicated? Is part of it the intangible nature of services?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: Could Mr. Smyth please repeat that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: Mr. Smyth said that goods were easy to treat of but for services, there are 12 sectors and 150 subsectors. I do now want to put words in his mouth, but I got the impression that we were moving in a direction that suggested some services would be a little less complicated to deal with and a little more visible. Is that a shard of light?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: We all grasped that. What I am taking out of it is the sense that we might be moving towards potential consideration of services, even if not all services. Mr. Smyth is obviously not going to be drawn on that point, and I respect that, given his position as a civil servant. It is a matter for us to ponder. I interpreted that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I did not get a chance to echo the thanks to Senator Frances Black. We look forward to her testimony tomorrow, and that of other witnesses. I thank the Senator for all the work she has done in bringing us to this stage. This is the calmest discussion I have experienced in many a year on the topic of what we have come to know as the occupied territories Bill. I thank everybody for the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: One of the things I would have liked was about the prevention and prohibition piece. Perhaps the witnesses could do a note to elaborate on that for the committee. Is there anything else we need a note on?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: Are the witnesses open to follow-up written questions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: General Scheme of Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025 (1 Jul 2025)

John Lahart: I hope we get more opportunities. This just emphasises the need for speed on the Attorney General's opinion as well. Again, I thank our witnesses for appearing before the committee today and for their contributions. I thank the committee members. The committee will now go into private session.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (26 Jun 2025)

John Lahart: As an aside on the GPO issue, the GPO has always been a hub of business transactions for well over a century. I am really excited by the Government's plans and the cultural and historical aspects. The GPO was always a hub of business and business transactions. My question relates to a serious backlog in HSE dental check-ups for primary school children. Constituents have contacted me...

John Lahart: 314. To ask the Minister for Health if the proposed vaccine damage compensation scheme will include retrospective eligibility for individuals who made submissions to the vaccine damage steering group prior to the scheme’s implementation, including cases dating back to the 1970s (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. Committee on European Union Affairs: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

John Lahart: I thank the witnesses for their reports and contributions. I practised as a psychotherapist and am always interested in the psychological aspects of this. It struck me in recent years it is like the planet is suffering from a lot more than this now. When we are under threat, what do we do? We either fight, flee or freeze. There is a huge amount of denial going on. A lot of it is from...

Committee on European Union Affairs: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

John Lahart: I like the point about reverting. When you are under threat, you want to go back to the way things were. That is one response and it is an interesting insight.

Committee on European Union Affairs: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

John Lahart: And the Scandinavians?

Committee on European Union Affairs: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

John Lahart: China poured more concrete in a 15-year period than the United States did in the entire 20th century. That is the other side of their fossil-fuel generated stuff. Their South American narrative is interesting because the world is changing. I am on these committees, as is Deputy Ward. Some South American countries would say that they share and admire European values. They feel...
