- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: Without meaning to strike a note discordant with the Cathaoirleach's remarks, I concur with Senator Horkan. As a long-standing Member of the House, I believe it is important that we do not lose the tradition of bringing the families of deceased Members to the House. We should not lose that. I am very strong on that point. I appreciate that the Covid pandemic interfered with proceedings...
- Seanad: Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad (23 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: In light of the vote in the Lower House, I propose that we suspend the sitting for 15 minutes if that is agreeable.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I join with the Cathaoirleach in welcoming Senator Boyhan’s visitors to the Gallery from Claremont. I congratulate State Representative Carey and his good wife Melissa on their magnificent wedding and I congratulate him on his re-election as a state representative of Massachusetts. I stand today to ask us all to reflect upon the events of the past four days. Five people were...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: An armband that symbolises not a political statement or political comment, but acceptance, inclusivity and diversity. FIFA, the governing body of one of the biggest sporting organisations in the world, lacks leadership and courage. It is disgusting, appalling and unacceptable. I do not get pretty emotional about things in this Chamber but what are we saying when an American journalist is...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Special Educational Needs (17 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I, too, welcome the students to the Gallery. I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Feighan, for being here. I appreciate that the matter I raise is not his area of responsibility. I raise the issue of special school liaison teachers through the prism of the pupils, families and staff in St. Paul’s Special School in Montenotte in Cork. I have been engaging with its principal, Anne...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Special Educational Needs (17 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank the Minister of State for his response. In the context of the reply, it is disappointing that there are no plans to extend the home school liaison post. The Minister of State with responsibility for this area, Deputy Madigan, has been very proactive in her role, to give her credit. However, there is a real and urgent need in our special schools. As we all know, there are...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I want to be associated with the votes of sympathy to Bridget Doody and her family on the passing of her late brother. It is a difficult time for their family. I rise to support Senator Seery Kearney on her contribution during Commencement matters. It is something I would ask the Committee on Parliamentary Privileges and Oversight to look at. I respect the Leas-Chathaoirleach's opening...
- Seanad: Central Bank (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (17 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Fleming, to the House. I second Senator Ardagh's comments on the Bill. I congratulate and compliment her on her work, diligence and tenacity and for chairing the cross-party committee. Today is an important day. The Senator is right that it is about ensuring better outcomes for people. Our debate today, while it may be about a technical Bill, is...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I welcome that we will have a minute's silence for Vicky Phelan. As was said yesterday, it is important that we not just commemorate her life, but that we put into words the actions she sought us to take. This morning the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Mary Butler, a very progressive Minister of State in the Department of Health, launched an important report by the...
- Seanad: Private Nursing Home Sector: Statements (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Private Nursing Home Sector: Statements (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: You are Micheál’s man so you have influence.
- Seanad: Private Nursing Home Sector: Statements (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the Minister of State and thank her for being here for this important debate. I wish to be associated with the words of commendation to her and her availability. When we meet the Minister of State on her travels, we cannot but be impressed by her warmth, understanding, competency and awareness of the issues pertaining to the nursing home sector. I say this as a former Chair of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank the Chairman for inviting Mr. Walsh. I also join him in welcoming Councillor Sarah Kiely and the Chairman's other guests from Limerick. In fairness to Councillor Kiely, she has been a very strong advocate for that region, and I thank her for her work and welcome her. I thank Mr. Walsh for his work. Dublin has a disproportionate share of the Irish aviation sector, and that is a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: To go back to Mr. Walsh’s comment about balanced regional development, we surely have an obligation as a State, in the case of the Cork and Dublin airport authorities, to make it attractive. It makes no sense to have people from Cork, Tipperary, Waterford and Laois driving to Dublin Airport.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: And to have choice outbound.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: We had that in Cork, I am sure Mr. Walsh will agree.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I agree. At the same time, there is enough in the pie to ensure there is an increase in growth in airports like Cork, as an example.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: That is a fair point. I accept that and I agree with Mr. Walsh on that. In the context of the decision of the US Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, this week to impose fines on airlines in terms of customer refunds and cancelled flights - I think $7.5 million or €7.5 million was imposed on the airlines - does Mr. Walsh think that is something we should look at here in Europe?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Update on Issues in Aviation Sector: Engagement with Mr. Willie Walsh (16 Nov 2022)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank Mr. Walsh for being here today. I think it is important, if we are going to review aviation policy, to invite Mr. Walsh back. I thank the Chairman for letting me in.
