Martin Kenny: As Deputy McGrath outlined, a group from the Irish MPS Society, including children with Morquio syndrome and their parents, met with Deputies this morning and are in the Public Gallery now. The group includes two children who are being treated with Vimizim. We all meet thousands of people in the course of our life, especially those of us here in the Oireachtas, but sometimes one meets a...

Finance Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Nov 2017)

Martin Kenny: We are supporting the amendment. Sinn Féin supports the concept of having a means of looking at farmer's taxation over a number of years. It was in our pre-budget submission. Many parts of the farming community are open to volatility in income. We regularly hear about the dairy sector's problems in this regard, but it exists in many other sectors as well. Deputy Mattie McGrath...

Questions on Promised Legislation (22 Nov 2017)

Martin Kenny: On the same issue, Deputy Fitzmaurice and I put down a motion on yesterday's Order Paper. In fairness to the Minister, Deputy Ross, I understand he has agreed that the statutory instrument was done in haste and should be reviewed, allowing for more consultation with the farming community. Will the Government agree to take the necessary motion, without debate, in the coming days in order to...

Martin Kenny: The motion is there - it is just a matter of agreeing it.

Rural Crime: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Martin Kenny: I support the motion. My constituency of Sligo-Leitrim is rural and sparsely populated. Many people living in rural areas, particularly in isolated farmhouses, are fearful of strangers arriving. This is a widespread phenomenon. It is important to note, however, that rural areas are generally safe places to live. The House should not send out a message that this is solely a bad news...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2017: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Martin Kenny: I thank the Minister and his officials for coming here. We have all met the delegation from the Irish Harness Racing Association. I can confirm that they are very committed and hardworking. Their project is going places but they need seed capital to make things happen. I am struck by the fact that the IHRA seems to be the poor relation to the other sectors that are so well funded and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2017: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Martin Kenny: Before we leave this topic, I would like to point out that the IHRA people only got their hands on the Indecon report on 1 November. It would not have been possible for them to have come up with a five-year plan in three weeks. This might have been an issue had the association got the report three months ago.
