Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: It gives me great pleasure to ask the Acting Leader to bring the Minister for Education to the House for a debate. I say sincerely and genuinely that, notwithstanding the issues with Covid, and I appreciate a gargantuan effort has been made with the leaving certificate, we are now into mid-October and the junior certificate students still have not got their results. That is very unfair. I...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I ask the Leader to facilitate a debate with the Minister for Health, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, on the HSE winter plan. The €169 million plan was announced yesterday, yet today we were told by Liam Woods from the HSE, who spoke on the national broadcaster, that the recruitment process to hire a consultant from beginning to end takes up to 40 weeks. We all agree that 40 weeks from...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: On Senator Craughwell's last point, enactment of this legislation can be facilitated by him right now and by not calling votes.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: In the context of the debate on these two amendments, there is a lot of commonality, a shared goal and a collective objective. This week we saw from the documentary on Tuskar Rock that aviation safety is paramount, and I commend everyone who was involved in creating the documentary. In the interests of bringing everyone with us and to bring a shared commonality, and the Minister of State...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I want to welcome the Minister of State's comments in her reply, especially around her commitment on a minimum number of meetings. That is a positive development. However, I am struck by two points. First, I was alarmed at the suggestion of three months and I do not know why it would take that long. To use an analogy, I could not see Michael O'Leary tolerating a three-month delay. I...

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: To be fair to the Minister of State, she has gone with the discussion here and I think-----

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: The Acting Chairperson is impartial. In defence of Senator Doherty, she is raising some legitimate points. I hope that before Report Stage, the Minister of State and her officials will look at some of what the Senator is proposing that can make the legislation better, which is what we are trying to do.

Jerry Buttimer: Agreed.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: On section 103, there were some concerns about dissolution. There was a concern about splitting staff and different part of the whole operation. Have those been rectified? I do not want to delay the Bill.

Seanad: Air Navigation and Transport Bill 2020: Committee Stage (Resumed) (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: In light of the whole issue around EU scrutiny of legislation, what the Minister of State has read into the record is a very important insertion that we should not just dismiss as technical. It is very technical, but under the guise of the Cathaoirleach's Seanad reform programme, he might give consideration to those regulations being used as part of a wider conversation in the House that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Long Covid and Monkeypox: Discussion (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank Senator Conway for allowing me to contribute first and the committee for its indulgence. I thank Dr. Ní Bhriain for coming before the committee this morning. I am a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, LGBT, community and am involved with our group in the Oireachtas as well. I welcome a number of points, including that the category of people who will be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Long Covid and Monkeypox: Discussion (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Could Dr. Igoe explain what will be done in respect of widening the criteria? Who will be vaccinated or what criteria will be applied? At the moment it is syphilis and then we do not seem to know where we are going as regards the communication. I welcome the extension to the 11 designated centres. Where will they be located?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome our witnesses to the meeting. I compliment the members of the committee on their questioning thus far. There is a real need for our witnesses to reflect upon the questions that have been asked and the issues that have been raised. I have been a bit disappointed with the responses we have got. Deputies Carey and Lowry made some very important points. We got very interesting...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I want to put on record my complete support for the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána. I was vocal at the recent meeting of the Cork city joint policing committee with regard to GoSafe vans. Surely the positioning of GoSafe vans should be about saving lives and not about being a potential cash cow for An Garda Síochána or the RSA
