- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Protected Disclosures (16 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: 5. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if she still has full confidence in the Garda Commissioner, with particular reference to the manner in which Garda personnel making protected disclosures are dealt with in view of the fact that the Garda Commissioner is now in position for over two years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. - Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Protected Disclosures (16 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: The Tánaiste is responsible for overseeing An Garda Síochána and setting its priorities. She has an obligation to ensure that the force is managed in an appropriate fashion. Given that she is the only one who has authority over the Garda Commissioner, is she still 100% confident in how the Commissioner has been functioning, especially in light of how the latter has handled...
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Protected Disclosures (16 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: It is unfair of the Tánaiste to say that we are rushing to judgment. This has been going on for over two years. If O'Neill recommends an inquiry, and if one is established, will the Tánaiste include other protected disclosures in it rather than the two in question? She will be familiar with Keith Harrison's case. His legal team said that, in a repeat of Sergeant McCabe's...

[40426/16]

Mick Wallace: 24. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality her plans to amend the Refugee Act 1996 to allow asylum seekers here to work, particularly in view of the well documented negative effects of enforced unemployment, which according to the HSE can compound mental health issues with boredom, depression, sense of isolation and loss of self esteem; and if she will make a statement on the matter....

- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016: Report Stage (15 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: Deputy Curran made the point that the average two-bedroom unit in Dublin city costs €1,500 per month to rent. He said that the 4% increase will amount to €60 per month. He was pointing out that a tenant would have to earn an additional €1,500 per year in order to pay that €60, which means that he or she will have to earn close to €5,000 extra after three...
- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016: Report Stage (15 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: That is an organisation that I described about 15 years ago in the public domain as a glorified golf club. It does not represent the average builder. I would be afraid and fearful that the Government of the day is taking too much advice from it. Is it taking advice from the real estate investment trusts, REITs? Is it taking advice from NAMA, which would like to build 20,000 houses to sell...

Mick Wallace: I am sorry to see the Minister go.
- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016: Report Stage (15 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: In 2015 there were 985 residential housing appeals to An Bord Pleanála with 75% of determinations confirming, with or without variation, the decision made by the local authority. In 2015 also 82% of all priority appeals made to An Bord Pleanála were disposed of within their targeted timeline of 18 weeks. I disagree with the Government's decision to bypass the planning section at...

Mick Wallace: We found out from a freedom of information request yesterday that 850 children under ten are in direct provision. Will the Government consider doing something a little special for them before Christmas?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Immigration and Refugee Crisis: Discussion (14 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: I thank the Minister of State. He started his contribution by telling us that truly to call ourselves Europeans, we must protect and share values embedded in the treaties. We feel that Ireland has not played a very strong role. I do not think we could really call ourselves Europeans, given our approach to date, and I do not think we are alone in feeling this way.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Immigration and Refugee Crisis: Discussion (14 Dec 2016)
Mick Wallace: How many of the 4,000 refugees have come here? I would like an update on the proposal to bring in 200 unaccompanied minors that were originally based in Calais. Last week, the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality stated that the French would identify young people as suitable to go to Ireland. What is meant by the term "suitable"? I draw the Minister of State's attention...
