Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2017
Vote 35 - Army Pensions (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I make the point that we will see an increase in the pension supplement every year because we are not addressing retention. We have not seen a policy in that area and as a result, we will be back here next year to seek another increase in the pensions budget.

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2017
Vote 35 - Army Pensions (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I will clarify. What I meant is that when people come out after two years in the cadet school they really rely on senior officers to show them the ropes. On coming out of cadet school they go into a posting. The officer corps tells us it is very important to have that link with senior officers who have served and who will pass on their skills and knowledge. It is how the organisation...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2017
Vote 35 - Army Pensions (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: The Minister of State did not address the Reserve Defence Force.

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2017
Vote 35 - Army Pensions (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I may as well finish my point. The Minister of State spoke a lot about capital investment in those in training, but I make the point this does not immediately address the capabilities of the Defence Forces, because capital is equipment and those in training are not fully trained and, therefore, operational. The Minister has told me there are no difficulties in the Air Corps and that it is...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Estimates for Public Services 2017

(23 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: Could the Minister reply to me in writing concerning the RDF?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Business of Joint Committee (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I mean this as no criticism but I agree with Senator Ruane that in terms of bias and speaking time, Senator Mullen and Deputy McGrath have had far more speaking time allocated than was given to other members. I believe the Chairman gave extreme latitude to those members to the committee, and I understand why she did so, but it was not appreciated, which is regrettable. There are certain...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Business of Joint Committee (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: On a point of order-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Business of Joint Committee (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: The Deputy's facts are incorrect. He was not present in the room at the time but I was. I ask him to check his facts before commenting on a political party of which he is not himself a member.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Business of Joint Committee (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: The Deputy should speak about his own personal experience.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: International Context: Dr. Patricia Lohr, British Pregnancy Advisory Service (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I thank Dr. Lohr for her presentation and for coming before the committee to give evidence and answer questions. Could Dr. Lohr please respond to the concern that there is a risk abortion will be used as a form of contraception? Could she please paint a picture of the reasons for different age groups of women obtaining abortion, for example, among women younger than 20, aged between 20...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: International Context: Dr. Patricia Lohr, British Pregnancy Advisory Service (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I do not take this view but some of the criticisms levelled at the provision of services were that women will use abortion services as a form of contraception. I would like to hear Dr. Lohr's response to that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Termination in Cases of Foetal Abnormality: Ms Liz McDermott, One Day More (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I am sorry to interrupt but do I have an incorrect copy of Ms McDermott's presentation?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Termination in Cases of Foetal Abnormality: Ms Liz McDermott, One Day More (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I thank Ms McDermott for attending. To join with Deputy O'Sullivan, I am disgusted to hear that Ms McDermott was treated that way in a hospital. It is not okay. There should be proper care, counselling and support for every family in that situation. I hope that it is not a regular occurrence. It is good that we got to hear that side of things. Could Ms McDermott tell us more about One...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Termination in Cases of Foetal Abnormality: Ms Liz McDermott, One Day More (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I thank Ms McDermott. That was informative. It sounds like One Day More is doing fantastic work. A lady presented to us a number of weeks ago. She was from a group that was searching for services in cases of fatal foetal abnormality. I realise that Ms McDermott does not accept that as a medical term but, like her, the lady told her story. I was moved by it and found her story...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Termination in Cases of Foetal Abnormality: Ms Liz McDermott, One Day More (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: I have taken up all my time. This is a very personal experience for each and every woman as an individual. I thank Ms McDermott.

Written Answers — Department of Defence: Defence Forces Remuneration (22 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: 248. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence if a general pay increase and-or pay restoration is planned for Army rangers; the details on this matter; if there are payments of increases and-or restoration of payments outstanding for Army rangers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [49601/17]

Rural Crime: Motion (21 Nov 2017)

Lisa Chambers: The issue of rural crime is real but this Government consistently plays down the problem, telling us the figures are actually going down rather than up. What is going down is the reporting of crime, not the crime rate itself. I commend my colleague for bringing this motion to the House. It has three key objectives. The first is to help gardaĆ. Two aspects of this are increasing...
