Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Committee Work Programme: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The Chairman is speaking about bringing witnesses before the committee. How many will we have? We must remember that there are restrictions. I know we, as Deputies and Senators, can cross county borders because it is necessary for us to do so but we must ask who we are bringing in and from where we are bringing them. This is important. We are telling everyone to be careful of what they...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Committee Work Programme: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Yes. We need to be very careful. As I said at the last meeting, rural Ireland has to be remembered. All of the local authorities that play a huge part have to have a say. Everybody is affected by homelessness. It is important that most of the meetings are not Dublin-centred. I understand that we have to find a balance but we need to make sure that rural Ireland, including Carlow,...

Brexit and Business: Statements (7 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I wish to express my concerns that when all the talk is about Covid-19, we seem to have forgotten the other major disruption facing our lives, that is, Brexit. Brexit will impact all of us from every sector of society. Last week, I met local farmers in County Carlow and we talked not about Covid-19 but about Brexit. The Irish farming and food sector has a higher dependence on the UK...

Covid-19 (Arts): Statements (6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: It is important that we all recognise the devastation of the arts industry, including writers, performers, musicians, technicians, planners, participants and the wider community. We have relied on the arts to soothe our souls. Those who create and work in this space have faced more sacrifices than most. In Carlow, we are fortunate to have the VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art and The...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services (6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: 754. To ask the Minister for Health if plans are being considered to make eye tests outside of school testing at high street opticians free for children under 12 years of age who are on medical cards; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that many children experience sight deterioration outside of school tests and the cost of the test can be an impediment to low income families...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Committee Work Programme: Discussion (6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I agree with the two previous speakers. Homelessness in my area of Carlow is not on the same scale as in Dublin. Lack of accommodation is a big issue. We are now finding that people coming in from bordering places such as Kildare, Newbridge or Laois are told they cannot go on our housing list if they are homeless. These people might have family living in the area. Years ago, a person...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Committee Work Programme: Discussion (6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I am not. This has to do with homelessness.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Committee Work Programme: Discussion (6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Can we define homelessness, in Dublin or anywhere else? This is my issue. Previous speakers defined homelessness. There are ten types of homelessness. How do we decide what is and is not homelessness and how to go about dealing with it? That is where the biggest problem is. Homelessness could mean sharing a house with someone. To me that is the biggest issue. It is not just rough sleeping.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Committee Work Programme: Discussion (6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Very well. My apologies. I thank the Chairman.

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Estimates for Public Services 2020
Vote 16 - Valuation Office (Revised)
Vote 23 - Property Registration Authority (Revised)
Vote 34 - Housing, Planning and Local Government (Revised)
(6 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I have three questions for the Minister. If he does not have enough time to respond now, he might come back to me in writing or at the end of the meeting. First, I welcome the provision for adaptation grants. That is an issue on which all of us have been working with the local authorities. From what I have seen myself and also what I hear from colleagues, the local authorities are...

Winter Plan 2020: Statements (1 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I welcome the Minister. The winter plan seeks, in part, to protect services and patient care delivery. I am concerned about the lack of services in the community for those in need of palliative care. Palliative care teams are fantastic but there is not enough of them. People could die without this care because of under-resourced services. This winter more people will die but we cannot...

Roadmap for Living with Covid-19: Statements (1 Oct 2020)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Two Deputies will speak for four minutes and another will speak for three minutes. I thank the Minister of State for being here. I am disappointed with those last remarks from the Deputy. We are in a Covid-19 situation and we are all working together. Deputy Tóibín's biggest problem today was criticising the Minister for Health. All of us are working here together.
