Committee on Education and Social Protection: Select Sub-Committee on Education and Skills: Further Education and Training Bill 2013: Committee Stage (1 May 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: I must accept the point the Minister of State is making. Will he clarify the timescale in case there is a possibility to look at this issue again? We should as a matter of policy have a definition of "further education". The Minister of State makes the point that this will be done as part of the national strategy. As a matter of policy, however, there should be such a definition. We...

Maternity Protection (Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (19 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: Absolutely, that is my point. If one is a Deputy representing Wexford or Donegal, the idea of sitting here for five days is absolutely family-unfriendly. It also is ridiculous to expect a Deputy not to be in his or her constituency and community for part of the week. I welcome this debate and in that sense, I welcome what Fianna Fáil has done in this regard. However, I do not...

Maternity Protection (Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (19 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: I have read the Bill and it does not give the option. A woman TD just would not do it. I had my first and only child when I was a Member of the Seanad, so I experienced this matter and I can think of many things that are wrong with the Bill. The Minister of State, Deputy Kehoe, went through some of the issues and I will expand on one of them. He said that we are different because, as...

Maternity Protection (Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (19 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: With regard to ordering Private Members' business, I have been Acting Chairman during Friday sittings, and it is notable that at present only Government speakers are available although we are debating and Opposition Bill. The Ceann Comhairle's proposal that the speaking order should be on the basis of Members indicating would probably make sense. I wish to pick up a point made by Deputy...

Order of Business (18 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: I support the Ceann Comhairle and Deputy Broughan's comments on Private Members' Bills. The Government's reforms are welcome and it was the Tánaiste's stated intention to rebalance our Parliament in favour of the ordinary Member, but there is a problem with reforms, in that we sometimes revert back to type. Topical Issue debates are an improvement on Adjournment matters, but we are...

Order of Business (18 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: This is not satisfactory. Debates should be taken by Ministers or, at the very least, Ministers of State from the Departments concerned.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Multilingualism in an EU Context: Discussion with Department of Education and Skills (17 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: I will bring the meeting to a conclusion. I thank the guests for their presentation. It is a subject we will look at again, so this will inform us in that. The Select Committee on Education and Social Protection will meet on 1 May 2013 to address the Further Education and Training Bill 2013.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Multilingualism in an EU Context: Discussion with Department of Education and Skills (17 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: Are there any further questions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Multilingualism in an EU Context: Discussion with Department of Education and Skills (17 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: On that point, while I was never very good at languages at school, what I found most off-putting was the teaching of different tenses. That absolutely washed over me and it did not matter if I said it hundreds of times, I could never get the tenses. I found that stopped me from learning languages and I now cannot speak any language but English.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Multilingualism in an EU Context: Discussion with Department of Education and Skills (17 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: Are there any other questions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Multilingualism in an EU Context: Discussion with Department of Education and Skills (17 Apr 2013)

Joanna Tuffy: I welcome the officials from the Department of Education and Skills to discuss multilingualism in an EU context with the joint committee. We note this issue is one of the topics for debate under the Presidency of the European Council, given the need for modern languages in today's multicultural economy. It is also an issue tabled to the agenda by members as something we need to address. I...
