Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Participation of People with Disabilities in Political, Cultural, Community and Public Life: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Many of my questions have been asked, particularly with regard to the arts. Access is a big issue that I am working on in my area. That is so important. Little things can make such a difference, so it is always about highlighting them and making sure that representatives in this committee take on board the issues the witnesses have raised today and do what we can to make changes. We must...

The National Youth Justice Strategy 2021-2027 and Supporting Community Safety: Statements (6 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I support the National Youth Justice Strategy 2021-2027 launched earlier this year. I welcome the opportunity to discuss the policy. We have all witnessed the rise of antisocial behaviour in Ireland, but we must also be careful not to demonise the young people of our country. We must offer solutions and measures that can be extended to divert young offenders away from the criminal justice...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (6 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I raise the confusion arising from Revenue sending letters to homeowners about the changes to the local property tax, including the need to reassess their homes. I know homeowners have to value their properties in order for Revenue to set a new rate for the next four years, but they are being sent to revenue.ie, where a residential property price register is available. It is not working....

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Regulation and Funding Issues Facing Workers in the Early Years Sector: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I thank Mr. O'Connor. It is so important that we appreciate and respect our childcare workers. They are graduated childcare workers. That is where we seem to be falling down. I have a massive issue with this. We saw over the pandemic that they were the front-line workers who allowed our front-line workers to go to work. We must, therefore, now make sure that we work with this budget. I...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Regulation and Funding Issues Facing Workers in the Early Years Sector: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I understand.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Regulation and Funding Issues Facing Workers in the Early Years Sector: Discussion (5 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I thank all the witnesses. It is so important that we examine this and address it. In my constituency of Carlow-Kilkenny, I work with after-school groups that each year do not know what funding they will get. It becomes an issue because funding is not guaranteed year to year. The DEIS model in disadvantaged areas was raised earlier. That needs to be a priority. It is not prioritised...

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I am sorry; I thank the Chairman.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Adoptee Voices Report: Aitheantas (5 Oct 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I would like to thank our guest speakers here today. I, too, want to compliment them on the report. I say “Well done” to everyone involved. It is critical that we read the report and that we listen to what people are saying. That is what we need to do. It was vital to hear about the shame and stigma felt by the adoptees. It is so important that we know we listen to people....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Passport Services (30 Sep 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The Minister stated it is an essential service. It worries me that the Minister cannot find the space. We had to move to the convention centre because we are an essential service and we were able to do that. The Minister is telling us here today the Passport Office cannot find office space. We have people trying to get a service who are waiting.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Passport Services (30 Sep 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: What the Minister is saying is we need something bigger. The Passport Office is back open part time, which is great, but it is only for appointments and only for urgent cases, that is all, unless it is a first-time one. That is unacceptable. The office needs to be opened to deal with the number of passport applications.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Passport Services (30 Sep 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The Minister can see from today’s debate that there is a serious issue. He called out all of the different numbers because all Deputies are receiving a huge number of queries within our own constituencies. It is the biggest issue I am addressing at the moment. While I welcome that online passport renewal is working fine, my concern is about the new applications, which take 40...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Passport Services (30 Sep 2021)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: 16. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade the number of applications for passports from counties Carlow and Kilkenny that are currently outstanding; his plans to address the backlog; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [47058/21]
