Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion (9 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: The response of this Government in terms of supporting older people has not been much better. Let us review the record of Fine Gael and the Labour Party in this area. Under this Government, there have been cuts to home help hours and home care packages, illegal implementation of the mobility allowance and motorised transport grant scheme and a reduction in palliative care experts and...

Seanad: Care of the Elderly: Motion (9 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: We may have a couple of speakers.

Seanad: Building Control (Carbon Monoxide Detection) Bill 2014: Second Stage (8 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: I welcome the Minister to the House. I commend Senator Quinn for again introducing important, practical legislation which can add value and save lives. It is one of a number of Bills he has succeeded in getting through the House and he deserves credit for doing so. It is refreshing and welcome that the Government will accept the legislation because we have been critical in the past of the...

Seanad: SME Envoy Networks: Statements (3 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: I welcome the Minister of State and the opportunity to participate in the debate on the SME sector and the SME envoy network. I was part of a delegation last January from the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. Six of us travelled to Brussels to meet officials and several Commissioners. We met one of the top officials who is heading up policy development for the...

Seanad: Friendly Societies and Industrial and Provident Societies (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2013: Second Stage (2 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Sherlock, for bringing this Bill to the House. I support the Bill and welcome its objective of reducing the legislative burden on co-operatives and enabling them to use the examinership process where necessary. This debate gives us an opportunity to reflect on the value of co-operatives in this State and to consider areas where we can make improvements....

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: I call on the Minister for Justice and Equality to come to the House to discuss the ongoing controversy surrounding him, his Department and office. There is a growing realisation among many outside the House that he is unsuitable as the Minister responsible for the justice system and that he should resign. There have been a number of high-profile sackings, resignations and retirements....

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2014)

David Cullinane: Does anybody in the Labour Party really believe the Minister has the credibility to carry out these reforms? I certainly do not believe he does and I am certain the vast majority of citizens do not either. It is high time somebody in the political system was made to account for all of the debacles we have witnessed in recent months. There have been resignations outside the political system...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: I join the sentiments of sympathy that have been expressed on the death of Nicky McFadden, and I pass on my condolences to her colleagues and her family. I am sure we will have an opportunity over the next number of days and weeks to pay tribute to Nicky, and I will do so when that occasion arises. Notwithstanding the views of Members of this House or the Dáil on the Minister for...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: No, that case is finished. It is a matter of public record and it has been talked about in all media outlets. The point is that this happened in Waterford. We need to know how many telephone conversations there were, why they were recorded, what information was recorded and how was it used, because it has profound implications for the judicial system in this State. It is very serious and...

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: I thank the Minister of State for his response and all Senators for their comments on this Private Members' motion. I will respond to them in the most constructive way I can.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: I will start with the contributions of Fianna Fáil Members. If we could generate electricity or energy from the hot air and wind that came from some Fianna Fáil Senators, we would be home and hosed in reaching our renewable energy targets. I must point to a number of facts. Sinn Féin's position on overgrounding versus undergrounding of high voltage power lines is the same in...

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: We join Senator Paschal Mooney in accepting that we do not have devolved power, but the reality is that-----

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: The only political party on the island of Ireland doing anything about trying to obtain full fiscal powers for the Northern Ireland Assembly and the people of Ireland is Sinn Féin.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: Unlike the Fianna Fáil Party, my party is organised in the North. It is the largest political party on the Nationalist side and one of the largest on the island of Ireland. That is where much of the opposition to Sinn Féin's motion comes from. Fianna Fáil Senators spoke against it, but they said they would support it, which is more hypocrisy.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: The Senator has no point of order to raise.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: I am glad that Senator Paschal Mooney has shifted his position in the past few minutes.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: I am grateful to Senator Paschal Mooney, but I point to the hypocrisy of Fianna Fáil on this issue. When it was in power, it was in favour of EirGrid's plans, high voltage power lines-----

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: Not personally, but the Senator's party was in favour of them. Fianna Fáil brought forward the Planning and Development (Strategic Infrastructure) Act that allowed EirGrid to go straight to An Bord Pleanála and bypass the proper planning system.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: The track record of Fianna Fáil on this issue speaks for itself.

Seanad: Renewable Energy: Motion (12 Mar 2014)

David Cullinane: Now that it is in opposition, Fianna Fáil can make policy on the basis of which way the wind is blowing. The opinion polls show what people think of Fianna Fáil. Senator Tony Mulcahy was one of the Senators who said Sinn Féin was against everything and in favour of nothing. The motion shows that we are in favour of maximising the potential of renewable energy sources.
