State Companies (19 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: Of course I never suggested that it is either-or. The current situation is that the private sector has simply failed to create the jobs. The jobs the sector has created are obviously very welcome. I am suggesting that we cannot be excessively dependent on either the private sector or foreign direct investment and that we must invest in our own State and semi-State companies to create jobs....

State Companies (19 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: It seems to be taking a long time.

Common Agricultural Policy Reform Proposals: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: The proposals published yesterday are of serious concern for farmers. Therefore, I welcome the Minister's assurances today in regard to his objectives. I hope his key priority will be to ensure the Food Harvest 2020 targets are achieved. Farming is a major enterprise in this country and a huge driver of the economy. Some 60% of Irish manufactured exports were derived from agriculture with...

Common Agricultural Policy Reform Proposals: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: I have two questions. Will the Minister comment on Deputy Kirk's question on the sugar industry? We know what happened with the industry, but I am aware of numerous farmers who believe that the industry can be reinstated. What are his views on that? Second, the age profile of farmers has been a cause of concern for a number of years. Are there new proposals to improve the age profile?

Sale of State Assets: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: The taunt of where will the money come from, was heard again this morning and we hear it almost every day in this Chamber. I have said time and again and I will repeat for the Minister where the money could be found.

Sale of State Assets: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: We know that the wealthiest 5% of the population have assets of approximately €250 billion. We know from recent Central Statistics Office figures that in the year 2009 alone, those same people gained an additional €27.2 billion. These are CSO figures, not my figures. These people do not pay a ha'penny in wealth tax. If they were in most other European countries they would pay a wealth...

Sale of State Assets: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: These people are getting away scot free. It is about time this Government looked for a bit of patriotism from people who are very wealthy and who have very significant assets-----

Sale of State Assets: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: -----and who are freeloading on the backs of middle and lower income families-----

Sale of State Assets: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: I refer the Minister to previous Ministers for Finance and to a former Minister, Richie Ryan. He was a Fine Gael Minister for Finance and he introduced a wealth tax which was abolished afterwards by Fianna Fáil. If that wealth tax was in place now at the rate of 2% as at the time, it would be bringing in €5 billion per year. It is not unrealistic and it is most reasonable to suggest to...

Sale of State Assets: Statements (13 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: -----would fund real job creation. It would also take the weight of austerity and the recession off the backs of ordinary people.

Community and Voluntary Sector: Motion (Resumed) (12 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: It is outrageous that ten minutes into this debate there is still no Minister present in the Chamber. While I accept someone could be delayed for a few minutes, ten minutes into a debate appears to be a deliberate affront to the Opposition and community and voluntary sector, the subject of this Private Members' motion. I compliment Sinn Féin's extensive motion that goes to the heart of the...

EU Summits: Statements (12 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: There are a number of things we know. The first is that there is now, if we did not know previously, a national and Europe-wide economic and social emergency. We know that the behaviour and treachery of the previous Fianna Fáil-Green Party Government has led to huge attacks on lower-income families and poor people generally in this State, and we know now that through the EU-IMF deal we...

Written Answers — Accident and Emergency Services: Accident and Emergency Services (11 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: Question 466: To ask the Minister for Health if the special delivery unit has presented its report into the Mid West Regional Hospital, Limerick, to him; and if he will put this report into the public domain. [28316/11]

Séamus Healy: Question 475: To ask the Minister for Health if the special delivery unit has presented its report on the Mid Western Regional Hospital, Limerick; and if he will place that report into the public domain. [28357/11]

Order of Business (6 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: The programme for Government promised to prioritise legislation to deal with the issue of transparency in that highly secretive organisation, the National Asset Management Agency, NAMA, which is now apparently paying huge amounts of money to the developers who got this country into huge trouble. Is there no priority for that legislation? When will it be introduced?

Order of Business (6 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: The legislation to introduce transparency in NAMA.

Order of Business (6 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: Absolutely. It is a highly secretive organisation, as you know well.

Order of Business (6 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: I asked him about this on a number of occasions in the last session.

Order of Business (6 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: It is listed.

Order of Business (6 Oct 2011)

Séamus Healy: It is No. 116 in section C. The Tánaiste told me a number of times previously that the Freedom of Information Act would be extended to cover NAMA. Is it not now a priority?
