Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Elimination of Hepatitis C: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)

Seán Crowe: To return to the pilot test structure, which our guests reckon will not be in place until the first quarter of 2023, have they talked about rolling that out sooner? I accept there are governance and ethical issues, but they are structural issues that could be dealt with within a matter of weeks rather than a year. If there is any one message from this meeting, it is that we need to speed up...

Seán Crowe: Moreover, the testing services need to move beyond Dublin, along with the governance structures. I suppose that is the other message arising from this meeting.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Elimination of Hepatitis C: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)

Seán Crowe: Regarding future research, will the Scottish model be examined? Is that seen as being the way forward for Ireland? It has been said it is a model that is clearly working in Scotland, where a similar cohort of people is affected. If we are talking about rewriting the model in Ireland, would the Scottish approach be the nearest one that is functional or would examples from further afield be...

Short-term Lettings Enforcement Bill 2022: Second Stage [Private Members] (24 May 2022)

Seán Crowe: There were 14 rental properties on one rental website in Dublin 24 this morning. Three of them were basically sheds or granny flats in the bottom of someone's garden. However, many full properties sit on short-term letting sites, taken out of the rental market during a housing crisis and little more than profiteering. The housing market is a machine with many moving parts. That is the...

Journalists in Conflicts across the World: Statements (24 May 2022)

Seán Crowe: As Deputy Kenny said, the murder of Shireen Abu Akleh as she covered an Israeli raid in the West Bank was a serious violation of international law and potentially a war crime. She was clearly identified as a journalist. She was wearing press insignia but she was targeted by sustained sniper fire, as Members have said. The attempt by the Israeli regime to muddy the waters and claim she had...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2022: Discussion (18 May 2022)

Seán Crowe: A number of members have indicated for a second round but I will use some of my own time for a change to discuss some of the issues that have not been addressed so far. The report refers to mesh implants and states that the Chief Medical Officer has put forward a number of recommendations. Would the witnesses be able to outline some of those recommendations?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2022: Discussion (18 May 2022)

Seán Crowe: With regard to scoliosis, we had some very moving testimony from doctors who were in the service but also from families. They were talking about the backlog and the challenges they are facing. As I said, it was moving testimony about the agony that children are going through. There have been problems within the system itself. Have they been resolved?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2022: Discussion (18 May 2022)

Seán Crowe: Another issue that came up is the waiting time for trying to get a hearing aid adjusted. I recently encountered the case of a child with Down's syndrome where it was not about getting a new hearing aid or getting tested, but just getting it adjusted, and they were talking about possibly waiting two years. Again, I am not bouncing this on anyone but there seems to be a problem with the system.
