Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: In calling on the Leader to arrange a pre-budget debate, it is important to consider what the Taoiseach said last night. If we cherish people, the budget must protect the vulnerable, the elderly, the disabled and those in the caring profession, particularly carers. If we place a high value on the work the people in question do, the budget should not cut back on their services and not hurt...

Jerry Buttimer: You made a monumental mistake Leader, and you know it. The Government has wrecked the economy.

Seanad: Business of Seanad. (19 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: On a point of order, while I respect the Cathaoirleach's decision and do not propose to challenge it, the matter of which I gave notice was addressed specifically to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government who is responsible for the provision of funding for local authorities. I asked only that the Minister outline his plans. The Cathaoirleach ruled that the matter...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: I would like to raise the issue of this country's national and non-national roads with the Leader. I wish to begin by offering my condolences to the families of four young women who were killed in an horrific car crash in County Galway last evening.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: Local authorities are facing a serious set of circumstances. I ask the Leader to invite the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to explain to the House how the maintenance of roads, drains, ditches and undergrowth will be funded in the months to come. We are now in November - one can imagine what the roads will be like in April or May, following a winter of rain,...

Seanad: Election Management System (17 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach for the opportunity to raise this matter and I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary, who is earning his keep this evening, for his attendance. The Minister of State will be aware from his involvement with Ógra Fianna Fáil of the importance of the involvement of young people in politics. It is also important for people across the political spectrum...

Jerry Buttimer: The Senator might have to do a FÁS course on it.

Seanad: Labour Services (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (17 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary. Although we propose to introduce amendments on Committee Stage, Fine Gael supports the Bill. I agree with Senator Carty that a significant challenge for FÁS is the situation of apprentices who are unable to continue their training. Even if we do nothing else, that issue must be addressed as a matter of urgency. In his speech, the Minister...

Seanad: Labour Services (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (17 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: That might happen but it is up to the people. The people will decide, not a cosy cartel of Fianna Fáil hacks. We must allow people to have confidence in FÁS. That is not the case currently and that has belittled the great work being done, which is a sad shame. I hope the Bill will provide for this and I wish the Minister of State well.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2009)

Jerry Buttimer: It has not. The Senator is factually incorrect.
