- Leaders' Questions. (10 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I thank the Taoiseach for his reply but he did not respond to one of my key questions.
- Leaders' Questions. (10 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Did former Commissioner and Minister, Pádraig Flynn, respond substantively to the questions posed by the former Fianna Fáil general secretary, Mr. Martin Macken? Has that response been received? Were the questions properly answered and explained by former Minister Flynn? Does the Taoiseach have an estimate, or an approximation, of the sums, in terms of donations, ostensibly given to Fianna...
- Leaders' Questions. (10 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It must be a substantial sum of money. The £50,000 of which we are speaking was paid some years ago. That is, in today's terms, a substantial sum. On the statement made this week that the Fianna Fáil ethics committee will address the issue concerning Deputy Cooper-Flynn, is this the first time that committee has addressed this matter and all that swirls around it?
- Northern Ireland Issues. (10 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: In respect of Deputy Kenny's point regarding the DUP's particular focus on paramilitary activity and his assertion that that refocuses attention on Sinn Féin, does the Taoiseach not agree that in reality the address of paramilitary activities, in all their shapes and guises, is the responsibility of all elected representatives and all parties? Does he agree we should be moving forward...

- Northern Ireland Issues. (10 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Has the Government a strategy to end the suspension of the institutions by the British Government and to move the Good Friday Agreement forward to full implementation? If so, will the Taoiseach outline the strategy to the House? Does he agree with the response of both Sinn Féin and the SDLP to the DUP proposals last week that they are, in essence, unworkable and amount to a blueprint for a...
- Hospital Inquiry. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I wish to share a minute of my time with my colleague, Deputy Crawford. I thank the Ceann Comhairle for the opportunity to speak on this important issue and I join Deputy Brendan Smith in welcoming the Minister to the House at this late hour. The failure so far to have the promised inquiry into the dispute involving two now-suspended consultants at Cavan General Hospital is grossly unfair to...
- Care of the Elderly: Motion. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Ar son Teachtaà Shinn Féin, ba mhaith liom tacú leis an rún in ainmna dTeachtaà Neamhspléacha. Is ceist fÃor-thábhachtach é cúram na sean-daoine agus is cinnte gur theip ar an Rialtas seo cúram ceart a chur ar fáil do an-chuid daoine aosta atá ina n-aonar agus atá i mbochtanas sa tÃr seo. On behalf of the Sinn Féin Deputies, I support the motion on the care of the elderly in...
- Order Of Business. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I make a little correction of Deputy Rabbitte's earlier remark when he mentioned 15 presidents of the EU. He forgot to include the Minister of State, Deputy Callely, who last week declared himself the overall president. He is busy writing to us all.
- Order Of Business. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: From watching proceedings this afternoon, nothing is more evident than the need for Dáil reform. This type of proceeding has been replicated time and again. No real substantive business has been addressed for a considerable period. We are toing and froing in this constant drama, which amounts to nothing at the end of the day.
- Order Of Business. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: There is no substance to it. We need to see Dáil reform brought forward urgently, and we will all participate in that. That is what needs to be done and I hope the Taoiseach will facilitate it at the earliest opportunity.
- Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following urgent matter: the need for the Minister for Health and Children to urgently address serious public concerns about the current situation at Cavan General Hospital and to ensure that the inquiry he initiated nearly six months ago, following the suspension of two consultants, is commenced and concluded without...

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Sinn Féin.
- Order Of Business. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I join with other Opposition colleagues in opposing the first proposition regarding the late sitting, primarily for the reason, as already articulated, that the statements on the Laffoy report will be taken after media deadlines. That is the reality. The Government does not want the attention of the media or to allow it the opportunity to report what will be said on this important issue.
- Order Of Business. (3 Feb 2004)
Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Confining it to that end of the evening is disrespectful to all that is involved in the issue to be addressed. It should have been given and can still be given, with the co-operation and agreement of the Taoiseach, prime time attention so that it can be properly aired before the public.
