Seanad: Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (30 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: There is a responsibility on the HSE and I do not know if it understands the word "responsibility". This morning in this House I sought an Adjournment debate regarding the NRA and I was told the Minister has no responsibility and cannot come in. I have sought Adjournment debates here regarding the HSE and I have been told the Minister, Deputy Harney, has no responsibility. The line...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: I join other speakers in asking the Leader to outline the schedule for the next two and a half weeks. It is important that we have a clear understanding of it. My question to the Leader is based on the Cathaoirleach's ruling this morning which I respect on my Adjournment matter. Did the Cathaoirleach declare that my Adjournment matter was out of order on the basis that the Minister for...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: Deputy Cowen has said he was not responsible for the collapse in the banking sector and the economic meltdown, yet he has held the positions of Minister for Finance and Taoiseach. Is the Government in complete denial and not in charge at all? Is it a dream and is everybody else at fault for the problems? Who is in charge in this House? Is it the Leader? Is the Taoiseach in charge of the...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: Does the Leader agree with Deputy John McGuinness who said this morning that the Taoiseach would not lead Fianna Fáil into the next general election?

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: Eventually.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: I remind Senator Ellis of how bad a job the Government is doing.

Seanad: Road Traffic Bill 2009: Second Stage (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. I compliment Senator Donohoe on his reasonable and good contribution and on his approach to this Bill. This Bill has been awaited keenly and while many vested interest groups have lobbied on it, the Bill will never replace the lives of those who have been lost in road traffic accidents. At the back of their minds, Members should remember those who have died...

Seanad: Road Traffic Bill 2009: Second Stage (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: I am reluctant to agree. On what grounds are we suspending the sitting? This is the third interruption of the debate on the Bill. I thought it was the custom when a Minister was in the Seanad that he or she would not be required to attend the other House. I accept the Leader has a difficulty with some members of his party in the other House. He might be poked by a stag.

Seanad: Road Traffic Bill 2009: Second Stage (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: Not really, no.

Seanad: Road Traffic Bill 2009: Second Stage (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: I look forward to being on the other side.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Seanad: Road Traffic Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: I hope the Leader will remember that we should not be adjourning the debate for votes in the Dáil. I hope the Leader will get his act together for tomorrow and for the rest of the debates of the week. As I was saying before I was interrupted by the vote, it is important that we tackle the issue of rural isolation and transport. I pose the following question to the Government Members. Is...

Seanad: Road Traffic Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (29 Jun 2010)

Jerry Buttimer: I accept that. It is like a goldfish bowl mentality. I would like to see the statistics for accidents on the motorways between Cork and Dublin and Dublin and Belfast. I appeal to the Minister that we should go back to enforcing the speed limits where we have the majority of road traffic accidents and fatalities, on the non-national roads of rural Ireland. I ask the Minister what is the...
