Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Will the Ceann Comhairle come back to me please?

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Can the Taoiseach assure us regarding the cost he has indicated with regard to the Cabinet meetings held, ranging from €5,800 to €3,700? Eight such meetings have so far been held, so we are talking of a figure of between €30,000 and €40,000. Is that a comprehensive costing or is it applicable only to the hire of hotels or other venues? When the Taoiseach refers to meeting and...

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: How does the Taoiseach decide? Who does the Taoiseach meet and facilitate? What interests are looming large in his thoughts?

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: That was with regard to the Rossport five.

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I thank the Taoiseach for acknowledging that the people involved were campaigning so well.

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Taoiseach looks quite unscathed.

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Question 13: To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on his meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Paul Martin, on 5 July 2005; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24387/05]

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Question 14: To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on his meeting with the President of the European Commission, Mr. José Manuel Barroso, on 30 June 2005. [24388/05]

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: In his meeting with the President of the European Commission, Mr. Barroso, did the Taoiseach discuss the EU services directive and is he aware of the great concern among trade unionists and public service workers across the European Union, not least the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, at the serious implications of the directive for State sponsored and State provided services? Does the...

Official Engagements. (28 Sep 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It arises from the Taoiseach's meeting with Mr. Barroso. With respect, it is no more detailed than any of the other questions put to him so far. Does the Taoiseach accept that from the perspective of migrant workers if this were to happen our legislation would not protect them while they were employed here? Does the Taoiseach agree with the ICTU, which stressed during a recent presentation in...

Civil Registration (Amendment) Bill 2005 [Seanad]: Second Stage. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: In his introduction, the Minister of State indicated that there are approximately 50 registrars involved, a greater number of whom are not employees of the Health Service Executive, but all of whom act as private registrars of births, deaths and marriages. What is the breakdown of those who are also employees of the HSE? Was there a review undertaken of the arrangement on e-registration,...

UN Reform: Statements. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Sinn Féin has been calling for a Dáil debate on the United Nations reform proposals since they were first published last December. Squeezing in a token one hour debate on the final day of session on the last possible opportunity before the UN summit is a disgraceful way to treat the vital and highly complex issue of UN reform. I cannot possibly deal adequately with it in the five minutes...

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: On Deputy Kenny's point on the County Mayo farmers, I add my support to the appeal for immediate mediation if it can be organised. It is imperative that it be organised and that a resolution be arrived at that is satisfactory to the families concerned. We would all agree that this is required. The judicial process does not in any way impinge on its moving forward.

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I have just made a further brief comment. The next point to which I want to refer concerns the tender process pertaining to national roads projects. Gama has been mentioned this morning. It has not——

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It has been alluded to and the company has not been awarded the works in respect of the Castleblayney bypass although I believe it has submitted the lowest tender. It is hardly any wonder that its tender would be the lowest given the practices it employs regarding its staff. I hope the Minister will note that this matter requires redress. On promised legislation, the International Criminal...

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Will the Minister raise the matter with the Chairman of the committee, his party colleague, so the Bill will be scheduled for address by the committee and we will have the chance to address the matters that concern Members in respect thereof?

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It is not. Such is the importance of the three funds incorporated in these propositions that it merits full scrutiny and debate in the House. It is not appropriate, given the importance of what is at stake, that we go ahead on a nod without debate. Particular attention must be paid to the European returns fund for which there must be real concern. I note from the circulated report from...

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It is very hard to follow Deputy Sargent this morning; it was one of his finest moments.

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I have no difficulty in supporting Deputy Kenny's amendment that the Dáil should return earlier, provided it is to address specific areas of legislation yet to be presented by Government. We all recognise that key areas need to be addressed. I will not repeat much of what has already been said. With the indulgence of the House, I say that I am concerned that Members contribute to the fallacy...

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2005)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: We do this House and democracy a disservice when we misrepresent a view that people are working the type of hours cited. Members of this House of all opinion put in phenomenal hours and I do not believe many in other sectors would put in the same hours as Members. Those are important points to be made and we all have a responsibility to say it.
