Isn’t it rather hypocritical that the Minister is stressing that INIS in his Department must be consistent in refusing to regularise undocumented migrants?
BUT the Taoiseach and Minister for Foreign Affairs have been petitioning the American government to provide an amnesty for illegal Irish who have been living in the United States for years!
Many undocumented migrants in Ireland are employed, pay taxes, USC and PRSI - for which they cannot reap benefits.
The real question is – what is stopping the Minister from recommending to INIS that they show generosity of spirit in legitimising, on a case-by-case basis, employed, tax-paying undocumented non-nationals who have not come to the adverse attention of the Gardai?
This point needs to be clarified.
After all, their taxes and payments have helped pull Ireland out of the recession, demonstrating that they merit a future in Ireland.
