I Find it remarkable that such an archaic tax is still in operation. In New Zealand, the state broadcaster was offered a choice- either keep tax income or keep advertising. You can't have both, and dole out tax payers money to overpaid tv executives. Not surprisingly, they kept advertising and abololished their TV licence fee. The TV tax came in a time where it was needed and Ireland had no TV station or representation on this media. Times have changed. I suggest changing with them. 160 euro a year? That is an insane amount of money to pay for services that I do not use. We refuse to pay our Gardai or Nurses a fair wage, but the big boys in RTE chortle as they stuff their faces with caviar. IF the entire sum went to TG4, I would support the TV licence. The entire sum should not come to more than 60 a year in that case, and only broadcasts in our national language would obtain support from this tax. I'd support additional taxes for payment of nurses and gardai, but I cannot in good conscience support the TV licence
