The Government’s approach has had disastrous consequences and has caused upset for people coming into the country seeking protection, as well as for people in local communities in some cases. The Government has approached the issue by throwing money at the situation, with millions of euro flowing from State coffers into the hands of wealthy property owners who are lining their pockets as a result of the crisis. It has always been the same approach when Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are in power - somehow, people with friends in high places manage to make a fortune out of a crisis. In this case, it is the privatisation of the immigration crisis and the lack of planning, consultation and thought on managing the emergency.

In some areas, this emergency beggars belief. In my home town of Drogheda, the town’s two hotels are now operating as accommodation centres.
