National Maternity Services: Motion [Private Members]

I am happy to have the opportunity to speak on this motion. I accept the need to support our maternity services and the staff who perform heroic work against all the odds. South Tipperary General Hospital, known to most people as St. Joseph's in Clonmel, is the hospital where all of my children were born. Six of my grandchildren were also recently safely delivered there. The staff of the maternity and other wards are tremendous and dedicated. Maternity services at Cork University Hospital, where my daughter was cared for, are exceptional as well. I salute them for the work they do under enormous pressure most of the time. What I do not accept is the credibility of Fianna Fáil on this issue. We have seen this recently in terms of the tragic case of the baby who was misdiagnosed and died at Holles Street hospital. Deputy Stephen Donnelly came out and said that we must investigate if there are existing dangers in the service. He already knew the answer.
