It is also claimed north of the Border that staff working on the maintenance of the water network are receiving threats from armed gangs over the issue. Sinn Féin wants assurances that those workers will be protected, yet they are strangely silent on the intimidation and threats and sometimes physical violence faced by workers contracted to Irish Water here. Once again, we see one stance in this republic and another stance north of the Border.

I believe we now have an affordable, certain and simple package of charges for Irish Water. While I acknowledge Irish Water has yet to win the confidence of the people, we now have an opportunity for Irish Water to be given a fresh start as it undertakes the vital job of ensuring a world class water supply and treatment capability for our businesses and citizens, not just for today but for tomorrow and for years to come.
