We also welcome the conclusion of the Bill which Sinn Féin has supported from the outset, although we raised some issues which were addressed. As the Minister of State said, the Bill is vital for the continuation and enhancement of research and development which are very important in these times of economic difficulty. If investment is made in research and development, it is hoped sustainable jobs can be created.

I welcome the all-Ireland aspect of the legislation. For the first time funding can be delivered on an all-Ireland basis and this measure should not be under-estimated. As a small island economy, it is crucial to have cross-Border co-operation. Sinn Féin welcomes this aspect of the Bill and looks forward to its implementation and success in the coming years.
