Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012: Second Stage
2:55 pm
Éamon Ó Cuív (Galway West, Fianna Fail) | Oireachtas source
The argument that everyone would give up working if they were taxed at 57% has been shown to be invalid. The self-employed have not stopped working since they have had to pay that level of tax, or slightly higher. We have also proposed the introduction of a 10% levy on off-licence sales, which would have a huge social benefit. Everybody in this House who has a mite of sense knows we face a huge timebomb due to the increased consumption of cheap alcohol bought in off-licences.
