I explained the approach I took when I was in the Cabinet. If the Minister of State does what I suggest, I will be the first to say one of the greatest abilities in life is to accept one got something wrong and that one is going to put it right. It would be to the considerable credit of the Government if it were to accept it has made mistakes, that it did not think things through properly or consider the cumulative effects of all the cuts and we were to come back next week. The Minister of State would be able to go home for Christmas with a clear conscience because he had done the right thing by the nation.
