I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss a matter of national importance, namely, the cap or limit on the number of discretionary medical cards given to people with serious or terminal illnesses who require these cards to cover the inordinate medical expenses they would otherwise face. This is a shocking development which will impact on seriously ill patients throughout the country in terms of the level of health care they can afford and their peace of mind at a time when they are facing incredible stress due to serious health problems. This matter cannot be glossed over and the idea that the Government can limit the number cards for people who are seriously ill is cruel and unusual. The matter needs to be discussed as a priority by this House.
