Question : To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason the Government failed to increase competitiveness and reduce the cost base to attract and retain foreign investment and stem the escalating closure and movement abroad of existing businesses; if he is aware that this is adversely affecting the nationwide employment profile, with the publication of the live register for March 2008 showing a rise in unemployment levels, particularly in the midlands, and Longford-Westmeath having lost 683 jobs in recent weeks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
