It is important to bear in mind that some of those taxpayers who request an end-of-year review of their tax liability prefer to claim the rent relief as part of that process. Accordingly, as there is a four-year rule for requesting such reviews, final figures for the years from 2004 onwards will not be available until that time limit has expired. It is expected that when final figures are available, the numbers claiming rent relief will increase substantially. Approximately 98% of those claiming the relief are aged under 55.
