Select Committee on Transport
Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
2:00 am
Jerry Buttimer (Cork South-Central, Fine Gael)
We have it in my own constituency with the Cork to Kinsale greenway. There has in a sense been a complete trampling of people's rights, in my opinion, where there has been no proper engagement and no meaningful consultation. That has led to people becoming very angry and upset. It certainly does not enhance the whole concept of the delivery of the greenways because they are of immense benefit across our country.
The code will be reviewed next year. However, I would make the point to the Deputy that in the context of some of the projects he raised, there needs to be proper engagement. There needs to be proper discussion with landowners, homeowners and residents. I will make the point very genuinely as somebody who thinks the greenways are a benefit to our communities that something is fundamentally wrong when people who never protest or never get involved in a dispute are exercised beyond belief. That is not good enough. I certainly believe there needs to be a better and more meaningful engagement with the people in question. TII-----
