Joint Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence, Truth and Democracy: Discussion
2:00 am
Malcolm Byrne (Wicklow-Wexford, Fianna Fail)
It now falls to me. I am finding the conversation fascinating. One of the matters that has been mentioned by a number of the speakers has been the concept of trust, which is critical. I always see that technology is the means to the end rather than the end in itself. Sometimes, we lose track of that focus. I was conscious of how Professor MacCarthaigh spoke about AI-generated decisions and that it was critical that we have public accountability. I look to something like an MRI scan where AI is already transforming it, but it is still the human doctor at the end of the piece. We are talking about how the State will utilise AI. Where our recommendations are concerned, how can we guarantee public accountability within public administration?
