Committee on Disability Matters
Access to Work for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion
2:00 am
Ms Avril Greham:
This is not a new problem. It has always existed. Speaking from experience, it is very demoralising when you ring for a taxi and it is no problem until you say you are in a wheelchair. Then it is a case of "Oh, sorry", and the excuses are tenfold. It is the same scenario with public transport as well. Sometimes ramps are broken or there are blockages in the area that is safe for you to be in on a bus. With trains, we have to give at least 24 hours' notice. It might be the case that I need to travel at the drop of a hat. In such circumstances, giving that notice is not always possible. The Deputy is absolutely right that it is a wider national issue. As a disabled person, I can say that it is completely demoralising.
