National Broadband Plan and Network Resilience: National Broadband Ireland

Mr. T.J. Malone:

We spent an awful lot of time on this in the earlier stages. We keep mentioning pace and predictability. For any contract, that is the key thing for us, that we can get 10,000 or 12,000 homes passed per month. We took a lot of time at the start of the project to get that right. There are 31 different local authorities across 26 counties and every single local authority has a different idea of where, when and how a new telegraph pole should be put up. That was news to me at the start of this and I am in this business for 25 years. We spent 18 months, believe it or not, in the early stages of the project, bringing together every local authority and finally getting what good looked like, so that when we did submit a licence application to put up a new pole - we have put up 65,000 of them since we started this project - we knew what good looked like and we knew we were going to get it rather than sitting there, hoping and wondering and then getting a rejection. You would then have contractors sitting on the side of the road.
