National Broadband Plan and Network Resilience: National Broadband Ireland

We are much further ahead at the moment than we anticipated. We have seen a much earlier adoption to our network in the early stages of it. However, that slows down and peters out as you get past the early part of the adoption. After four years, we are at around 60%. There are instances involving elderly or vulnerable people. There are also people who may be satisfied with the legacy copper and do not see the need for this or understand it. It is incumbent on us all sitting around the table today to ensure that message gets out. It needs to get out from us and from the Department and Government as to the benefits if switching to fibre broadband and the benefits it can bring not just in terms of broadband but also by allowing people to switch their telephone over and keep the same number in the house. People do not realise that. They do not want to pay for an extra number whereas this combines the two services in one. We have that out there and we will always have it.
