Mr. Paul Sweetman:
It is a really telling statistic. We are seventh globally with regard to competitiveness. When you delve into the statistics in this regard, you see there are some areas where we are performing very well. We are in the top ten for a number of items. However, with regard to basic infrastructure, such as the energy grid, water and wastewater infrastructure and public transport, we perform poorly. According to the International Institute for Management Development world competitiveness index for 2024, we were ranked between 30th and 40th with regard to infrastructure. Therefore, there has been a disimprovement over time from an already low base. It is far easier to move up the rankings from 44th to 34th than it is to move from 14th to fourth. Therefore, there is a lot of low-hanging fruit we need to push on, but it is about investment in basic infrastructure, including water and wastewater infrastructure, the electricity grid, housing and anything to do with quality of life and the movement of people and goods.
