Petition on Pearse House Regeneration

2:00 am

Mr. Neil Maloney:

I have also said to them that we have to look at the under-occupancy of some of the flats. There are people living in three-bedroom flats who do not need them. There are also people living in two-bedroom flats who do not need them either. We need to look at that as well. That is a policy that probably needs to change within the council. We need to be able to house people who badly need it.

When the Community Action Network, CAN, report came out, what stood out for me that there is a block around the corner from me, where 20 families were in a block of 36 flats with two bedrooms. I was absolutely shocked because I never even noticed that. The work CAN did with us really opened our eyes to exactly the problems we are living with and the issues that are coming down the line if we do not start addressing this.

We know that a lot of the three-bedroom flats are under-occupied. We also know there are families who could move into them after the regeneration or deep retrofitting, whatever name we want to put on it now. There needs to be sustainability in the project.
