Petition on Pearse House Regeneration
2:00 am
Mr. Neil Maloney:
Looking it, 30 homes could probably go in there if three-bedroom houses were built. Four-bedroom homes would probably be aspirational, but it is the demand that there. The Senator rightly mentioned Markievicz House. Strategically, the Government and local government are not looking at these sites. With Markievicz House, one of the buildings going in there is a 100-bed hostel on the corner of Lombard Street and Townsend Street. That should have been redeveloped and tied into the existing complex. That would have aided with a regeneration project that could have happened at Markievicz House as well.
Unfortunately, these buildings are sometimes just being left there. Nobody is doing anything with them and then when residents start kicking up, someone wants to push all of a sudden and do something that is totally against what we are trying to do. The area we live in is saturated with bed and breakfast accommodation and hotels. We always welcome business coming in - it is a fundamental part of any country - but there is a community and there is a voice there that need to be heard. That is what we are about. We are trying to bring everybody together. There are new communities coming in all the time, including people from across the world, looking for homes. Integration needs to happen. We need to have the social and other facilities to go with that. That will be for another day when I come back.
