Capital and Infrastructure Issues: Discussion
2:00 am
Ms Anna Classon:
I thank the Deputy for the question and for his support for our RNLI crews and Arranmore lifeboat station. I think it is about awareness. To be fair, most people are very supportive of the RNLI and the emergency services and want to do the right thing. However, good weather brings anxiousness and delight. We have had well-publicised issues at Ned's Point in Buncrana and in Bundoran. The first thing we need is awareness. It is very challenging. If we are alerted by the Irish Coast Guard and our pagers go off, we will proceed to the station in a safe fashion. Putting barricades up slows us down. It is about working with the general public, who do support us, and making them aware that, yes, it is a lovely day and we may put something out. In Buncrana, we are looking at maybe putting out cones and things like that to allow people to take a moment to stop and think, and to ask why the cone is there. It is there because it is a hashed area and if they look to their left, they will see the lifeboat station, so it might mean something to them. Putting up barriers and closing areas off will only slow us down. It is complex. It is about behaviour and asking people to think before they act.
