Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen
Decisions on Petitions Received
2:00 am
Louise O'Reilly (Dublin Fingal West, Sinn Fein)
I advise anyone watching from outside that Deputy Buckley and I remain at the committee meeting. All of the petitions we will now consider have all been considered previously at our private session, where we had a chance to have a discussion. All of the actions on these petitions that will be agreed at the committee have all been considered previously.
I will take this opportunity to wish Margaret very well. This will be her last meeting. On behalf of committee members, I thank Margaret for all her work, of course, but also wish her the happiest and healthiest retirement possible. She has more than earned it.
P00001/25 is a call for the NTA to reconsider a ban on e-scooters that was sent to us by Mr. Shane Weldon. As I said, the committee considered this previously. The Department of Transport has corresponded with the committee. I propose that we publish the response from the Department and that the correspondence be forwarded to the petitioner for comment within 14 days. Is that agreed? Agreed.
P00007/25 is a call to ban election posters in Ireland from Mr. Evan Conway. This petition was considered at our private meeting. I propose the committee publishes the response from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and also sends that correspondence from the Department to the petitioner for his comment within 14 days. Is that agreed? Agreed.
P00011/25 concerns the rights of survivors of domestic violence. This petition was considered at our private meeting. This has been superseded by a procedure instigated by Tusla. I propose the documentation sent to us by Tusla should be sent to the petitioner and, on the basis that the correspondence addresses the matters raised, we close this petition. Is that agreed? Agreed.
P00024/2025 is termed "long-running pensions inequality issue". This has already been discussed and considered at our private meeting. I propose we publish the response from the Department of Social Protection, which has been received by the committee, and that same correspondence be forwarded to the petitioner for his comment within 14 days. Is that agreed? Agreed.
That concludes our consideration of public petitions. I genuinely and sincerely invite members of the public to submit a petition to us via the online portal available at petitions.oireachtas.ie. A petition may be addressed to the Houses of the Oireachtas on a matter of general public concern or interest or an issue of public policy.
As members have no further business to discuss, this committee is adjourned until 30 September 2025 at 11 a.m., when we will meet in both public and private session.
