I recall the triple lock was introduced by a Fianna Fáil-led coalition Government that said it was a cast iron guarantee on neutrality. Many people who opposed the Nice treaty said the triple lock was nonsense, an empty formula and smoke and mirrors. People change their positions in terms of the circumstances.
