State Response to Online Disinformation and Media and Digital Literacy: Discussion (Resumed)

1:30 pm

Dr. Shane Murphy:

On where young people get their news, one thing that comes up somewhere else in that report is that 18- to 24-year-olds, and it might even go up to 18- to 34-year-olds, are, compared with other groups, far more likely to get their news incidentally. They are not going to specific news apps or specific news sources. They are not deliberately seeking those out.

They are getting their news or, as far as they are concerned, they are informed about current events and things that are going on as it comes up on their TikTok feed, their Instagram For You page, their Facebook page as they are scrolling through a wall. They are not necessarily considering where it is coming from or who is producing it but this is the primary way many of them are consuming most of their news.
