I will take Lough Derg as an example. It is the second largest lake on the island. People do not necessarily go through a lock on Lough Derg ever, if they have a boat. There is a necklace of harbours and facilities right around the lake, which covers three counties, and people might never leave the lake. Therefore, they never go through the lock at Athlone or Victoria. The north Shannon is a little different in that while it has Lough Key and Lough Allen, there is a series of locks to get people down to Lough Ree.
