As Deputy O'Reilly says, an AI Overviews product was recently rolled out in the US. It has not been launched here in Europe. As I understand it, this feature provides an AI-generated overview of the search results for a particular query. It has been in testing for a while. One of the reasons it is being rolled out is that it is very helpful to users and they are more likely to click on the links for further context that are provided in by AI Overviews.

Since it has been rolled out, there have been a few stories about specific queries that have been producing misleading results. To describe how the system works, it is a large language model that produces a piece of text based on the results returned for a particular query. These cases are not typical of the experience of most users with the product. In most cases they are searches for uncommon pieces of information with a limited number of search results. We continue to refine these models and continue to test. The product is part of our Google Labs experiments. Each of these instances is fed back into the systems that review and refine the system and make it safer. It has not been launched here.
