Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Éileamh don Ghaelscolaíocht: Plé

Ms Carmel Nic Airt:

We are talking about waiting lists to go into these schools. On the joined-up thinking, you have heard it from muintir Mhaigh Eo, from muintir lár tíre and from Cormac McCashin. Providing extensions is not the solution. There is a whole piece that is being ignored here, that there are at least three times 400 between Maigh Eo, ár gcás agus an chás seo who are being totally ignored. Think of that waiting list of 36. If those spaces were freed up by taking those children out of the English-medium schools who want to be in an Irish-medium school, then there would be no waiting lists or pressure on Coláiste Pobail Chloch na Coillte. If you were to take out the children who are going into St. Brogan's from the Gaelscoil in Bandon, you will not free up 93 places but you will free up 20 places. It is a no-brainer as far as I can see. I do not understand why we are not naming the elephant in the room, that we are forcing children into these situations because it is the only option available.
